How Fraud Detection Principles Can Save Lives: From Money Laundering to Airborne Threats.
Every day, more than 20 million people across Africa use a FinTech system I helped create. Most of them will never realize the layers of protection behind each transaction, a resilient ledger built to capture intent, assess risk, and flag anything that doesn’t belong.
What I didn’t realize back then was that the same system we designed to detect fraud and manage financial anomalies would one day serve a completely different mission: protecting people from invisible threats in the air.
The Ledger Model for Indoor Air Quality grew out of that FinTech experience. At first, it was simply about monitoring air quality. But soon, the questions shifted. Why was the CO2 level in this room climbing at 2 am.? Why did a VOC pattern resemble one we’d seen before, right before a staff member became unwell?
Suddenly, patterns mattered more than precision. Ledgers came back, not for money this time, but for molecules.
This book is for builders of systems, of safeguards, and of trust. You might be a software engineer, a clinical epidemiologist, a hospital infrastructure manager, or an urban pollution analyst. Whatever your role, if you care about detecting threats before they happen, this book is for you.
