This comprehensive study, authored by Raphael Garcia da Costa, evaluates the effectiveness of Sodium Lignosulphonate, a green-based dust suppressant serving as the base for DustGuard, at the Christmas Creek Mine, Roy Hill Station, East Pilbara Shire, Western Australia, from September 20 to October 29, 2021.
Deployed via a 70,000-litre CAT 787 Water Cart, the dust control strategy was monitored using Sentinel’s DustScout, a system that manages corrugation and potholes to reduce dust suspension, across five distinct stages: Pre-Mitigation (Baseline), Mitigation in Progress, Week After Mitigation, Post-Mitigation, and Outcome/Overview.
The study demonstrates a significant 350% reduction in total dust suspension during peak conditions, with mean PM1 levels dropping from 38.83 µg m-3 to 6.50 µg m-3 , PM2.5 from 15.00 µg m-3 to 2.50 µg m-3 , and PM4 from 27.24 µg m-3 to 4.70 µg m-3 post-mitigation. Temperature deltas between air and road surfaces decreased from a pre-mitigation range of 16-30C to a normalised range of 0.04-0.07 C, while humidity retention improved from 16.56% to a stabilised 16.10% post mitigation.
Additionally, economic savings of approximately AUD 213,440 per year per water cart were realized through a 60% reduction in water usage (from 350,000 liters to 140,000 liters daily) and a 50% reduction in fuel consumption, with a fleetwide potential of AUD 10,672,000 and a 20% reduction in downtime.
